Powerful industry standard modelling package.

Pros

It is the most commonly used CAD package within manufacturing and has a vast array of plugins. There is a lot of help online so getting community support for niche questions is normally possible. The software is very powerful and can do 99% of what you want if you know the technique for it. It is a logical workflow without too many head scratchers.

Cons

It is definitely very pricey but generally covers its cost if using it commercially. The assembly system is not as robust as it could be and it lets you get a way with lots of bad practices that will bite you later on without you realising although this does provide more flexibility than other CAD packages.

Not worthy of the price

I have been using Solidworks Premium (2017 and 2020 SP3.0) for the past 3 years and I still do. It is a very unstable program. Crashes more often than not and it has many bugs that make the creation of large assemblies feel like hell. Customer support is not satisfactory at all. Solidworks customer service is also not helping as well. I would not recommend this product to anyone. You are surely better off with using Solid Edge / Creo Parametric or AutoDesk Inventor.

Pros

- Assembly features (configurations / exploded views) make the creation of assembly drawings faster
- Rendering options are vast

Cons

- Very unstable as a program (Used it on more than 5 computers with multiple configurations)
- Its developers focus on adding extra useless features instead of focusing on the program stability
- Command layout is not practical (Features Tab has three (3) buttons for the Extrude Command (Boss Extrude / Cut Extrude / Intersect) where as in Inventor there is only one command button. This is a personal opinion and I highly prefer AutoDesk's approach on this
- Customer Support: Depends on the Value-Added-Reseller (VAR). Some of them are very cooperative whereas others just want your money. Personally I do not like representatives and I prefer to contact the actual company (AutoDesk has the upper hand here).

One of the best 3d modelling software with simple but powerful tools .

Overall my experience with solidwork is very awesome, I use solidwork daily form last 6 years .

Pros

Multi body feature in a part modelling is very helpful for me , top to bottom assembly is so easy , it's sketching tools are are very reliable. Motion study analysis, 360 photo-realistic image is amazing and so on ... End apart then all these features it's user interface is really good. Simple n so powerful software I'm using it from last 6 years.

Cons

Apart from all powerful tools the only issue is crashing some time some commands are taking lot of time end something software got crash which is not good. Large file are also taking lot of time open . Solidwork drawing is quite boring end not so effective it got crash when you use for long time without saving.

Solidworks and its uses

Pros

I appreciate SolidWorks Premium for its robust modeling and simulation features, which help streamline product development. It offers powerful tools for design validation and 3D modeling. The ease of use can vary based on individual familiarity with CAD software, and integration depends on a company's existing processes but is generally manageable with SolidWorks' support and resources.

Cons

I find cost of SolidWorks Premium can be a drawback. The ease of use varies among individuals based on their familiarity with CAD software, and integration with existing business processes can require adjustment but is typically manageable with support and training.

Best source to create 3D design

Pros

SolidWorks has been the only platform I have relied on for years. It has everything you need to create different things such as models and designs. As an engineer it is a must to use this platform and to create assembles.

Cons

In my opinion it is not user friendly, you would need to take an in-depth course about SolidWorks.

SolidWorks assists you with your modeling and assemblies for a perfect design.

As a training assistant in mechanical engineering in the mining industry, I have been able to use the software with almost all its functionalities. It is truly a high-quality software.

Pros

I love the modeling functionality in SolidWorks because it's the one I use the most. Since it's in my field, mechanical engineering, I often create designs for mechanical parts for my company. The 3D modeling capability has been a great help, and it's also easy to use.

Cons

I have used SolidWorks for several months, and yet I cannot find any flaws in it. The software is comprehensive.

Good Deal

I have created a lot of product designs quickly to determine the weight of a product to get our customers an accurate quote, and a picture they can see. We also use it to design fixtures that can be made at another shop.

Pros

Solidworks is very easy to use. You don't need a lot of training because once you have the basic concept down, it becomes intuitive on how to create models. There are many ways to complete the same commands, so it can just be a matter of preference on which method works best for you. Customer support was able to help me with almost every problem I had except for third party hardware issue. It's customizable, but not too customizable.

Cons

Solidworks can crash at times and work is lost if you don't save it. There are some features that I was not able to create in solid that probably could be done in surfaces if I had time to learn it.

Alternatives Considered

Reasons for Switching to SolidWorks Premium

Solidworks has the support and the market presence to continue developing a first class 3D cad product.

Solidworks is industry standard a easy to learn, but expensive

SolidWorks was the first CAD software i ever used, in the start if you use others you are going to think that all the other are too hard to use, but as you become a experienced designer things start to become way better in other softwares.

Pros

SolidWorks in most engineering schools is going to be the one that is teached first, it is pretty easy to use and learn, has its most important tools in the first page wich makes it the best for startes. The Render tools are by far the most sofisticated in the market for a long time, so if want to impress a client thats a must.

Cons

It's easy to use and learn in the start, but as the modeling goes more complex, and you need to simulate a mechanism or even a make a stress–strain analysis it becomes harder, some of the tools are hidden in the software and you need someone that passed through to find the habilit a lot of its tools that you going to need, like weldment tab for an exemple.

It's an excellent program and I recommend it to anyone.

Pros

Many tools and work options that most programs do not have. My application of choice for mechanical 3D work for machines, and even just for fun working on 3D drawings.

Cons

It's a bit expensive in my opinion. It has a lot of features, which is good, but it takes time to learn how to really use the program independently.

Second best in this field imho

I've used this software for some projects during college, it works very well, FEM too keeping into account the limitations of this kind of analysis that can never be as complete and reliable as for more powerful and complex softwares. Coming from Autodesk inventor i have to say I like Inventor more, but it is mostly a matter of personal preference instead of a true difference in performances or features

Pros

Everything you may need for engineering, including also FEM analysis and parametric modeling

Cons

I couldn't find, during my usage, great problems with it. I was sometimes annoyed by some difficulties in finding straight away the right command, but it is just a matter of getting used to it and personal preference

Solidworks make 3D cad more intuitive and easier

Pros

I most like the tools available, specially for animation. I have been developed at least 50 parts on solidworks and the interface is very intuitive. Best software ever.

Cons

I would say that depending on the computer you use, it laggs and make you restart sometimes. But the feature is the BOM. I have some trouble setting up the BOM on drawings.

For Designers , It is one of the best software i ever used as a designer. It will used to create the new innovation designs and models for future developing products . Without design creation ,there is no product will be manufactured.

Pros

As i am using this software , the designs and data's are highly accurate and only knowledged person can able to handle this software . One of the Design software used by all MNC companies.2D ,3D models designs are very effective to analyse the designs . it will improves the imagination power of human beings.

Cons

It is little expensive to get the software , but the cracked version is used in most of the places like colleges and institutions etc,If the sample designs are defaultly present inside the software will reduces the time consumption of the designers and it will improve the quality of the product.

Lower cost, powerful and friendly CAD simulation program

As a hydraulic engineer, SolidWorks is an essential component in my CAD software kit specifically for the mechanical design of valves, pipes, and structures as well as for the simulation and verification of structural faults

Pros

The price of the program is really one of its main attractions, considering that meets the expectations and needs of mechanical design. It has powerful 3D design capabilities and a very friendly interface. Solidworks is a more thought-out and useful program for mechanical engineers and designers and is not as appropriate for the architectural design. It can be used to create 2D and 3D designs, has enough tools to incorporate elements such as shading, textures, lighting, and transparencies that facilitate the reading of the design. Another advantage is its library of materials and the possibility of creating customized materials that can be stored in this library. You can also add and edit any text, and like other CAD programs, the design work is done in layers that you can easily select and change. Also has the option of extrusion that easily allows you to create a 3D model from a 2D plane or the reverse process. The design facility includes a customizable palette where you can locate the tools that are most used and also, also we have the function of recording macros. SolidWorks offers the possibility of working with DWG, DXF, STEP, STL formats, as well as printing their designs in 3D. Additionally, one of its main advantages is that we can work with raster and PDF files. As for the simulation process, the significant advantage of SolidWorks is its SolidWorks Security Factor Wizard, with which you can examine the created design and locate structural weaknesses.

Cons

Although the renderig, illumination and the photorealistic representation are not powerful as those obtained with other CAD programs, they are still powerful and allow to visualize the designs with an acceptable quality. SolidWorks tools are powerful for small projects, such as specific parts and components, but they are not efficient for the design of more complex projects such as large motor examples.

Cons
