Icinga - a versatile software with lot's of potential to be customized for every need
Getting started with Icinga can have a steep learning curve, which is understandable since setting it up in a convenient way requires Icinga 2, Icinga Web 2, and Icinga [sensitive content hidden]. The versatility adds to the complexity, but once you have a solid overview of the technology stack, your monitoring capabilities are nearly limitless.
Pros
I think Icinga 2 is highly customizable. You can create custom check plugins or implement web-based enhancements. There's also an active community.
Cons
I don't like the "new" theme but since that is adaptable too, this is not really a problem
Reasons for Switching to Icinga
When I was choosing a monitoring backend, the community forums for other open-source alternatives were not as active as community.icinga.com.- Industry: Hospital & Health Care

Monitoring at its best
I'm pretty happy with Icinga because of its modularity. We monitor about 500 hosts and about 15000 Services. In such environments it-monitoring is mandatory, and I truly recommend to use the module "business processes" to get a logical structure and map the dependencies from your applications to the monitored hosts and services
Pros
Its so flexible you can monitor literally everything that has an ip address.
Cons
the learning curve at the beginning is somewhat hard to understand the concepts behind agents, zones, endpoints ... but when you master it, the possibilities are enormous what you can do with it

Icinga - customizable but not easy
We chose to build our own knowledge about Icinga systems, so we don't rely on any support or vendor. It has it's challenges that open source projects like that bring with them, but community is large and solutions are generally easy to find.
Pros
It is free and very flexible. Community is large and develops many extensions to the core project.
Cons
It has constant development that can be a problem with outside plugins that are not supported so professionally. Also core product needs some knowledge to set up and maintain. It is not just an install wizard.
