> Open Dental Software emerges as a comprehensive dental practice management application, uniting a myriad of functionalities within its modular framework to accommodate dental practices of various scopes and specializations.

At the core of Open Dental's offering is a robust set of features engineered to cover the extensive spectrum of practice management needs, from appointment scheduling and patient record management to generating complex reports tailored to the specific analytics sought by a practice. The software, built upon the Microsoft .NET Framework, boasts a modern MySQL database backend, ensuring speed, stability, and data integrity while maintaining the agility required to handle large volumes of patient data.

Open Dental further distinguishes itself with its graphical tooth chart, which allows for a dynamic visual representation of a patient's dentition over time. This feature serves not only as an intuitive diagnostic tool but also enhances patient communication, facilitating a more engaging discourse regarding treatment plans and oral health status.

Interoperability is another cornerstone of the Open Dental philosophy, evidenced by the software's seamless integration with an expansive array of third-party applications and services. This is achieved through a broad network of bridges connecting Open Dental to other programs, clearinghouses, and dental service providers. Such connectivity ensures the freedom for practices to continue using their preferred ancillary services while taking full advantage of Open Dental's centralized practice management capabilities.

The suite of eServices propagated by Open Dental further amplifies practice efficiency, enveloping offerings such as a patient portal, payment portal, web forms, web scheduling, secure email, integrated texting, automated messaging, and mobile applications. These eServices are designed with a dual focus on enhancing the patient experience through convenience and on easing the administrative burden on the practice's staff, thus promoting a more streamlined and patient-centric workflow.

Continual development and rapid release cycles are testaments to Open Dental's evolutionary nature, with new versions and enhancements regularly made available to its user base. Open Dental avows a commitment to the dental community through user forums, newsletters, and social media groups, cultivating an environment where users can share insights, discuss challenges, and identify solutions collectively.

In tandem with its software solutions, Open Dental provides an array of complementary services including data conversion from existing dental practice management systems, sheet design, custom query generation, and dedicated incident support, all aimed at fostering a smooth transition for practices adopting its software and ensuring sustained operational success post-adoption.

>
> **Pros**: Easy to customize and feature-rich. You can tailor it to what you want
>
> **Cons**: Monthly support costs, but you don’t have to pay this fee

-----

### "The Best Practice Management Software" — 5.0/5

> **Verified Reviewer** | *16 June 2022* | Hospital & Health Care | Recommendation rating: 10.0/10
>
> **Pros**: I've used Dentrix and Eaglesoft before using Open Dental, and have to say that Open Dental is by far the best. Everything is straightforward, it's simple to learn, and very customizable. Managing patient records and tracking claims and payments is a breeze. Their customer support is incredibly helpful, and the backlog of webinars and videos are the perfect training tools for someone learning the software. On top of the great functionality, the cost is incredibly affordable and makes selecting Open Dental a no brainer.
>
> **Cons**: The only downside that I've experienced is that some things take extra steps to reverse if you've made a mistake. Other than that, it's very easy to use.
>
> Open Dental manages all of our schedule, records, and manage claims and payments. I couldn't practice without it.

>
> **Pros**: Open dental is very user-friendly. Open dental makes it very easy to figure things out if you do not know how to do something by utilizing there help button on tool bar.
>
> **Cons**: The live support is not an option unless you pay monthly for the service so therefore sometimes it takes a little bit to find the answers
>
> I recommended open dental over any other dental software. i have used eaglesoft, dentrix, curve hero, easy dental, and a few more and open dental is by far my favorite

### "Open Dental software pros and cons." — 2.0/5

> **Ryszard** | *5 January 2026* | Health, Wellness & Fitness | Recommendation rating: 2.0/10
>
> **Pros**: Affordability. I like voting system for new features (however new features are done very slowly, it typically take years before they are considered). There is some ease of use and lots of online trainings.
>
> **Cons**: With lower price comes lower expectations. First of all the Canadian version is not put sufficient efforts. I really would advise all Canadians to consider other software suppliers who consider Canadian market more seriously. Many features can only be used in US, unfortunately.

Finally the weakest part is patient tracking. It simply lacks feature to assure no patients is left behind. I noticed we are loosing patients because of lack of tools to track them. Any tracking is done with manual queries which can be very unfriendly to end user.
>
> It was good. Support is good. Software does what is necessary. However in case of any escalations they are not cooperative. It clearly shows they grow too large and are disconcerted with individual users.

### "Everything you need, nothing you don't." — 5.0/5

> **Lori** | *9 May 2022* | Medical Practice | Recommendation rating: 10.0/10
>
> **Pros**: Clearly designed by people that understand dentistry.
>
> **Cons**: Price of eservices. Specifically text and emails.
>
> There is a learning curve, but if you take the time to explore the features, you will find the solution to nearly every problem you have ever come across. If not, it's probably in the next update.
