My experience with Microsoft Planner

It has gone quite well for us, we managed to reduce costs by purchasing everything from a single provider (Microsoft). Previously we used Google apps for mail, repository and Zoho for projects and tasks, but now we have mail, planner, office software in a single dashboard.

Pros

It is a tool that comes included with the licensing that we already pay for along with Office 365 and Exchange.
It is very easy to add new users, which we link to our corporate Microsoft account.
It helps us reduce user administration and licensing since all those who require this service and others from Microsoft are managed on the same platform.

Cons

They are not dynamic like other tools we have used in the past.
Obtaining gantt or flow charts is not something that simple.
Although it helps the entire organization in general, users who manage projects still use project software especially when we have to follow up with third parties.

A basic but versatile tool forms an important part of the Office 365 suite.

I have really enjoyed using Planner for what it is - basic project and task management. Within the context of a team it ex excellent for Agile project management. Outside of this context and when more robust project management is required Planner is often too limited and leads us to look for more able tools.

Pros

Super simple to use and with a good range of functionality, Planner is a light project management tool that is an important part of the Office 365 suite. Tasks for part of the task engine within Office 365 through Microsoft To Do. Information and categorisation that can be recorded on a task is versatile and, when coupled with search and filters, makes keeping track of tasks easy.

Cons

The most frustrating aspect of Planner is the lack of a public view of the board and tasks. Only members of the team can follow progress. Planner is so closely coupled into the team membership of Office 365 that it limits its uses.
Also, the lack of gantt chart functionality weakens the ability of Planner to be considered a serious project management tool.

Great simple tool to manage project evolution.

Even if the tool still requires some improvements, but since it is low cost and included in the Microsoft 365 package, the benefit of living with those small issues is worth it.

Pros

In comparison to other tools I've used like JIRA, this tool is really easy to configure, to use and it works extremely well with Microsoft Teams.

Cons

The tool still needs improvements with statuses, notifications and scheduling. For statuses, they're not customizable and the pre-established statuses are too limited. For notifications, they are half of the time very slow to be received in mailbox, up to 30 minutes delay. For scheduling, you can only set a end date, but it is not possible to set multiple follow up dates and it is also impossible to set dates on subtasks.

Alternatives Considered

Jira and Zoho Sprints

Reasons for Switching to Microsoft Planner

The Zoho Sprints tool was very complicated to configure and not very fluid in its use. Jira was my #1 choice, but the price of it was too high. In searching for alternatives in the tool of my Microsoft 365 platform, I've discovered Planner and after a few trials I adopted it.
