About Revit

Revit is a building information modelling (BIM) software that helps constructions companies, structural engineers, architects and mechanical, engineering and plumbing (MEP) service providers manage designing, 3D visualization, analysis and other construction operations. Revit includes communication management tools, which lets teams share files, simultaneously work on projects and add notes or annotations on designs in a shared workspace to facilitate collaboration across multiple departments. Features include process design and documentation, 2D sheets import/export, construction coordination, fabrication management and more. Additionally, engineers can generate a variety of model-based designs such as elevations, floor plans and 3D views. Revit supports integration with Autodesk Insight 360 application, which allows managers to gain insight into operations and utilization of resources to handle energy and environmental performance throughout the construction lifecycle. Pricing includes monthly/annual subscriptions and support is extended via phone, documentation and other online measures.

Revit best software for AEC industry

I have been using Revit for over 15 years and have watched how it has grown and mor

Pros

Revit is an all encompassing BIM modeling program. It is great for generating models for a project that also translates to rendering/animation/VR, plans, details, elevations, sections, schedules and sheets. There is so much you can do with Revit and so many add-ons that make this program the premier program for the AEC industry.

Cons

I do not like that you can not go back version of Revit, meaning if a project is started in 2024 year version, you can not open that model in 2023 year version.

Revit is still #1 for creating coordinated construction documents

I use Revit daily, I'm a big fan for sure.

Pros

Revit is the industry standard. For its original purpose, creating a Coordinated Drawing Set, I have not seen a better platform.

Cons

It's not an intuitive program. If you haven't learned the 'language' or Revit you can easily feel lost/frustrated.

Alternatives Considered

ARCHICAD

Reasons for Choosing Revit

Construction Documents were much easier to create

Switched From

SketchUp and AutoCAD

Reasons for Switching to Revit

Revit is the Industry Standard. Many projects require it.

The architecture and construction industry standard BIM software for a reason.

I often hear that people either love or disdain Revit in the architecture profession, but even with it's downsides there is a reason it is the industry standard for BIM because of its vast menu of capabilities.

Pros

Revit has many integrated features as a BIM software that makes difficult tasks on prior CAD software seem simple and finally attainable.

Cons

Where Revit is rich in feature based options and 'type based' sequencing, it can also feel too formulaic at times when needing to focus on the design side of a project.
