# Modal

Canonical: https://www.softwareadvice.com.au/software/515771/Modal

> Modal is a serverless cloud platform designed to handle CPU, GPU, and data-intensive compute workloads for AI and data teams. It supports tasks such as inference, training, batch processing, and sandboxed environments with low latency and automatic scaling. It is used by machine learning engineers, data scientists, and AI development teams to build production-scale applications in areas such as generative AI, computational biology, autonomous systems, and enterprise software development.

The platform includes a Python-native SDK that allows developers to define cloud infrastructure and application logic within a single codebase using composable components. It provides elastic GPU scaling, offering access to hardware such as H100s, B200s, A100s, and A10Gs across multiple clouds and regions. Multi-node training configurations are supported, with high-speed Infiniband networking and containers that start in under a second. The platform also includes secure, ephemeral sandboxes for isolated execution of untrusted code at scale. Integrated observability tools provide logging and visibility into functions, sandboxes, and containers for monitoring in production environments.

Modal routes workloads across clouds and regions in real time to deliver globally distributed compute with minimal latency. The infrastructure is SOC2 and HIPAA compliant, offering isolation, team controls, and data residency options. It supports protocols such as token streaming, WebRTC, and WebSocket for online inference applications, as well as parallel hyperparameter sweeps and batch processing across large-scale GPU instances.

## Reviews

### "Streamlining AI Development with Modal" — 4.0/5

> **Matthew** | *28 August 2024* | Computer Software | Recommendation rating: 9.0/10
>
> **Pros**: The serverless nature of Modal’s architecture made the deployment and the scaling of our video summarization project easier. Because of its user-friendliness, our team was able to get quickly onboarded.
>
> **Cons**: We liked modal for its helpful Python-first approach but one minor issue we faced was some restrictions regarding fine grained infrastructure customization across modal compared to traditional cloud providers.
>
> Modal turned out to be a good tool as it sped up the development of our internal tools since we were able to concentrate on the actual development of the video summarization application rather than building it.
